NA Number

NA numbers (North America) are used to identify hazardous materials that are transported by road, rail, air, or water within the United States and Canada. These numbers are assigned by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and they are similar to UN numbers, which are assigned by the United Nations.

The range of NA numbers is from NA 8000 to NA 9279, and it includes a wide variety of hazardous materials such as explosives, flammable liquids and gases, toxic and infectious materials, radioactive materials, and many others. Each NA number corresponds to a specific hazard class and division, which determines the regulations that apply to the transport of that material.

As you mentioned NA 2212 is used to identify all types of asbestos, and NA 3334 is used to identify self-defense sprays, which are not covered by the UN numbers.

In addition to the NA numbers, the DOT also uses proper shipping names, technical names, and identification numbers (such as DOT-SP or DOT-E number) to identify hazardous materials. These additional labels are used to provide more specific information about the material and its hazards.

It is important for shippers, carriers, and other personnel involved in the transportation of hazardous materials to be familiar with the NA numbers and other identification labels, in order to ensure the safe and compliant transportation of these materials.
